Khajuraho Temples: Chandela Architecture, Sculpture and Heritage

The Khajuraho Temples are among the finest examples of medieval Indian temple architecture and sculpture. Located in Madhya Pradesh, the temple complex was built mainly between the 10th and 11th centuries under the Chandela rulers. The monuments are renowned for their elaborate carvings, religious themes and sophisticated architectural design.

History of Khajuraho Temples

The construction of the Khajuraho temples is generally associated with the Chandela dynasty, which ruled parts of central India during the medieval period. A large group of temples was built between approximately the 9th and 12th centuries, although only a smaller number survive today.

The temples were dedicated to different religious traditions, including Hinduism and Jainism. Their presence reflects the religious and cultural diversity of the region during the Chandela period.

Architectural Features

Khajuraho temples are primarily built from sandstone and feature carefully planned layouts, elevated platforms and distinctive towers known as shikharas. The central tower is often surrounded by smaller rising towers, creating a mountain-like appearance.

Important architectural elements include the garbhagriha, mandapa, entrance porches and richly decorated exterior walls. The temples demonstrate the development of the Nagara style of North Indian temple architecture.

Sculptures of Khajuraho

The temples are especially famous for their detailed stone sculptures. Their walls feature images of deities, celestial beings, musicians, dancers, warriors, animals and scenes from everyday life.

Some sculptures depict human intimacy and erotic themes, but these represent only one part of the much broader artistic program. The carvings also express religious ideas, mythology, social life and the artistic traditions of medieval India.

Major Temples

Among the best-known monuments are the Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Lakshmana Temple, Vishvanatha Temple, Devi Jagadambi Temple, Chitragupta Temple, Parsvanatha Temple and Duladeo Temple.

The Kandariya Mahadeva Temple is particularly notable for its tall shikhara and extensive sculptural decoration.

UNESCO World Heritage

The Khajuraho Group of Monuments is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of its outstanding architectural and artistic value. The surviving temples provide important evidence of the cultural achievements of medieval India.

Cultural Heritage

Khajuraho represents the artistic sophistication of the Chandela period and remains an important part of India's architectural heritage. Its temples demonstrate how architecture, sculpture, religion and social expression were combined into monumental works of art.
