Mahabalipuram: Pallava Architecture, Temples and UNESCO Heritage
Mahabalipuram, also known as Mamallapuram, is a historic
coastal town in Tamil Nadu famous for its magnificent Pallava-era temples,
rock-cut monuments and stone sculptures. The town flourished mainly during the
7th and 8th centuries under Pallava rulers.
The Shore Temple, Pancha Rathas and the
massive Arjuna’s Penance relief are among its most important monuments.
These structures showcase the Pallavas’ contribution to the development of
South Indian temple architecture and sculpture.
The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram was declared
a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984. The site remains an important
destination for understanding India’s ancient architecture, art and cultural
heritage.
